Ferris Takes Most Awards At Pasco Band Competition

Compiled By Mary Beth Donelan

The Ferris High School Band and Drill Team took home the most awards of any of the 22 bands competing at the Oct. 7 Southeastern Washington Cavalcade of Band in Pasco.

The students won Best Percussion, Best Auxiliary (Drill team), Best Drum Majors and Best General Effect. Ferris also placed second in the Open Division.

The 1995 Ferris show, with 170 band members and 35 drill team members, has an African theme.

Central Valley High School’s band won the Grand Sweepstakes Award.

Mead and Lewis and Clark high schools also competed in the finals.

Three Sacred Heart Medical employees recently received awards for outstanding achievements:

Kathy Caldero, epidemiology associate, was presented with the Toastmasters International Presidential Citation for her “outstanding contribution and dedication to the Toastmaster cause.”

This is one of the highest awards presented by Toastmasters and is given to fewer than 20 people in the world each year.

Marie Cole, a therapist at Sacred Heart’s Rehabilitation Center, received extensive training and was certified to provide lymphedema therapy to patients with breast cancer and other conditions affecting the lymph system.

Deborah Markin, emergency department clinical nurse specialist, received the 1995 Nurse Excellence Award in Practice from the Spokane Chapter of the Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma Theta Tau International).

Melinda Sophn, Spokane, received a $1,000 scholarship from the 1995 Jeannette Rankin Foundation Award of Athens, Ga.

Sophn, divorced and mother of three children, had no marketable skills when she decided to return to college rather than face minimumpay jobs or welfare.

She graduated from a community college with a 3.8 grade point average and now attends Whitworth College.

Shannon Baz-Casper, Daniel Carroll, Tanja Gohlert, Melissa Harvill, Nick McCarthy and Carrie Reeves, seniors at St. George’s School, were selected to the National Merit Scholarship Corp.

Catherine Slack is a semi-finalist.

The scholarship corporation identifies the top 5 percent of scorers as commended students.

In other St. George’s scholastic news, 13 students were named as AP Scholars by the College Board for exceptional achievement on the college-leved Advanced Placement Examinations.

The students are: Shannon BazCasper, Mark Cartwright, Shyre Christensen, Dan Cooke, Tanja Gohlert, Nick McCarthy, Ron Rivers, Lizzy Sadler, Mike Thomas, Jerome Hagen, Catherine Slack, Matt Stembridge and Edie DeNiro.

DeNiro earned recognition as a Scholar with Distinction, a Washington State AP Scholar and a National AP Scholar by earning an average grade of 4 or better on at least eight exams. He is the first student in St. George’s history to earn this distinction.
