Waldorf Earns First Pga Tour Win With Texas Open Victory
Duffy Waldorf won his first PGA title and runner-up Justin Leonard earned a chance to play for the big money next week.
Waldorf shot a 7-under-par 65 Sunday for a six-stroke victory in the $1 million Texas Open in San Antonio. His 20-under total earned him $198,000.
Leonard, who had a final-round 68, collected $118,000 for finishing second and that moved him from 33rd and into the top 30 on the money list for the year and into the select field for $3 million Tour Championship to be held next week at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla.
Loren Roberts, the first-round leader who was 31st on the money list, finished in a tie for third at 8-under 280 with John Mahaffey and John Morse and moved into the top 30.
Kirk Triplett, formerly of Pullman, shot a final round 73 to finish 24 strokes off the lead. He earned $2,679.
John Bland, a South African making his second appearance on the Senior PGA Tour, shot a 6-under-par 65, 12-under 201 for the tournament, to win the $800,000 Ralphs Senior Classic in Los Angeles, by a stroke.
Jim Colbert missed an 8-foot birdie putt on the final hole that would have forced a playoff.
In St. Andrews, Scotland, Andrew Coltart’s ace and Sam Torrance’s persistence earned Scotland its first Dunhill Cup in 11 years when it downed Zimbabwe 2-1, spoiling a record-breaking effort by Nick Price.
Price set the record for the best five rounds in one championship - 67, 68, 68, 69 and 68 for a 20-under aggregate of 340 - at the home of golf and still went home a loser.
Allen Doyle parred the first playoff hole to win the $250,000 Nike Tour Championship in Roswell, Ga., and earn a berth on the 1996 PGA Tour.
Doyle had a 1-under-par 71 in the final round for a 5-under total of 283 that tied him with John Maginnes, who had a 69.
Todd Pence of Cheney, and a golfer for Brigham Young University, finished in a four-way tie for third Saturday at the Savane College All-America Golf Classic in El Paso, Texas. Pence finished with a 213, two strokes back of winner Tiger Woods.
