Canadian Dollar Skittish

Protracted political disarray in Italy and France drove foreign exchange investors to the safety of the German mark again on Monday, extending the dollar’s loss against the mark to 2.5 percent in the past week.

The flight to the mark also drove the dollar down against the Japanese yen as European Monetary Union was exposed to a budgetary meltdown in Italy.

The Canadian markets were roiled by another poll indicating separatists in Quebec might win next week’s referendum, sending the dollar higher against its Canadian counterpart.
