G-Prep Defeats CV In Soccer Shootout

Gonzaga Prep, after battling to a regulation tie at Central Valley, escaped with a 2-1 win in a Greater Spokane League soccer shootout Monday night.

Regulation ended 1-1 as the Bears scored quickly with a Holly Hyatt goal at 4 minutes and held the Bullpups in check until a Danielle Mirabell goal at 72:00.

G-Prep emerged victorious when Michelle Caputo hit the deciding goal in the shootout.

At Lewis and Clark, Ferris used two overtime goals to beat the Tigers 2-0. After two scoreless regulation halves, Megan Cummings scored at 83:00 for the Saxons in the first overtime. That was followed 4 minutes later by a Mariah McConnaughey goal in the second overtime.

North Central senior goalkeeper Cami McGowan’s 23 saves in her final GSL game wasn’t enough to stop first-place Mead as the host Indians were shut out 4-0.

Allison Beatty was involved in three of Mead’s scores with two assists and an unassisted goal.

At University, Shadle Park was limited to five shots on goal as the Titans blanked the Highlanders 3-0. Emily Stuenkel scored twice and had an assist on a Casey Lektorich goal.

College volleyball

Idaho junior middle blocker Louisa Kawulok is the Big Sky player of the week. Idaho went 3-0 as Kawulok averaged 12.7 kills and 11.3 digs per match and hit 486.

Playfair Race Course

Jockey Darrell Brinkerhoff and 17 horseplayers had a big day Monday.

Brinkerhoff strengthened his newly acquired grip on second in the rider standings by collecting five victories, top effort of the season.

The happy bettors each picked up $10,817.80 for wagering on the winning horses in the twin trifecta.

Brinkerhoff won both ends of a $288.20 daily double, as well as the third, fifth and featured ninth races.

The twin-tri pool was $183,902.60.

Golf

Mark Rohde of Spokane shot a 65 Sunday for a 54-hole total of 202 to finish third in the Budweiser Tri-Cities Invitational during the weekend. He won $2,000.

Craig Gronning of Spokane shot a 72 for a 204 to tie for fourth and earn $1,250. Chuck Milne of Portland won a playoff with Mike Combs of Richland to earn $6,000 after both finished at 201.
