Small Schools State Volleyball

State A-3/A-4 Tournaments

Where: College of Southern Idaho, Twin Falls

When: Friday and Saturday

A-3 pairings: Match 1 - West Side (20-8) vs. Melba (19-10), 11 a.m. PDT. Match 2 - Wallace (20-6) vs. Filer (16-5), 12:30 p.m. Match 3 - Fruitland (19-6) vs. Ririe (12-11), 2. Match 4 - Prairie (23-4) vs. Firth (29-6), 3:30.

Wallace Miners

Coach: Dick Schreiber

Top players: Joy Sperry, 6-foot-1, senior, middle blocker; Dana Streeter, 5-8, sr., outside hitter.

Coach’s comment: “If we can go to Twin Falls and play loose and confident they we’ve got a chance (to repeat). If we go down worried about defending and that we have to do it we’re going to have some troubles.”

At a glance: The Miners placed fourth and took home a trophy when Sperry and Streeter were sophomores. So Schreiber would like to see the pair end their careers with one more trophy. Being a known quantity, unlike the past two years, puts a big target on the Miners’ back, Schreiber said.

A-4 pairings: Match 1 - Cambridge (23-2) vs. Hagerman (14-9), 11 a.m. Match 2 - Oakley (17-9) vs. Troy (18-1), 12:30 p.m. Match 3 - Clark Fork (19-8) vs. Nampa Christian (16-6), 2. Match 4 - North Gem (21-7) vs. Shoshone (31-5), 3:30.

Clark Fork Wampus Cats

Coach: Sandy Ross

Top players: Hailey Scofield, 5-7, sr., setter/hitter; Angie Ponack, 5-10, sr., mb; Sasha Storaasli, 5-8, sr., oh; Donella Pratt, 5-7, sr., mb.

Coach’s comment: “We go to state with a little more balanced attack than in the past. We take state-caliber serving to state, too. We’ve done what we can do to put ourselves in position to do well at state.”

At a glance: It would be a surprise if the Wampus Cats pull a disappearing act at state like many North Star League teams have done over the years. Ross believes if her team serves well and hits like it has been her team will fare well.
