Clinesmith To Play At Santa Barbara

Mead point guard Stacy Clinesmith, co-Most Valuable Player in the Greater Spokane League last year, has made an oral commitment to attend University of California at Santa Barbara on a basketball scholarship.

“I went down there a couple of weeks ago and fell in love with it,” said Clinesmith, MVP of the State AAA Tournament last spring when Mead finished fifth. “I fell in love with the team and I fell in love with the coaches.”

Clinesmith pick UCSB over Oregon, Eastern Washington and San Diego State. The official weeklong early signing period begins at the end of the week.

“I kind of wanted to experience another part of the world,” she said. “I’d love to have my parents see me play and I know they would love to see me play. That was one of the negative factors.”

Clinesmith, All-GSL as a sophomore, averaged 16.4 points last year in sharing MVP honors with Kelly Bartleson of Shadle Park. In Clinesmith’s two years, the Panthers ran their league winning streak to a record 32. She then averaged 22.5 at state as Mead rebounded from a first-game loss to win three straight to finish fifth. The Panthers finished fourth her sophomore year.

Clinesmith was the GSL scoring leader in soccer last year and again this fall. She was the MVP as a junior and will likely repeat that honor when the all-league team is announced next month.

She briefly considered trying to play soccer in college but said, “My heart’s really with basketball.”

Mead won the state soccer tournament Clinesmith’s sophomore year and begins its effort to match that next weekend.

Awards

John Sayre of Spokane, one of the top swimmers in NAIA history, is one of seven former athletic personalities inducted into the Central Washington University Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Sayre, a Ferris High School graduate, who transfered from the Air Force Academy, swam for the Wildcats for two years. He won six individual NAIA national titles, two national relay championships and was the NAIA National Swimmer of the Year in 1983 and ‘84. The Wildcats finished fourth in ‘83 and first in ‘84.

Sayre, also named the outstanding swimmer at the 1983 Hapoel Games in Israel after winning three gold medals and one silver, lives in the Seattle area.

Other inductees: Daryl Basler, faculty athletic representative for 27 years; Les Wyatt, basketball, 1974-77; Laura Myers Peer, cross country and track, 1978-81; Maurice Hanks, football, 1981-84; Jack Hubbard, basketball and coaching, 1942-43 and ‘47; and Stan Mataya, sports information, 1949 graduate.

Basketball

Fans will get their first look at the 1995-96 Gonzaga University men’s team when it plays the Spokane Old Dogs AAU team, comprised of Bulldogs alumni, Saturday in a 2 p.m. matinee in Martin Centre.

“We had to go with a day game because we didn’t know if some of the Old Dogs could stay up late,” jabbed Gonzaga coach Dan Fitzgerald.

Ken Anderson, an associate professor in the School of Business at Gonzaga and a senior on the 1980-81 Bulldog squad, organized the team again. Returnees expected:

Forward David Cole, 1995; centers Marty Wall and Caslav Trifunovic, ‘94; forward Eric Brady and guards Jamie Dudley and Felix McGowan, ‘93; guard Jarrod Davis, ‘92; forward Bret Holmdahl and guard Darryl May, ‘90; Jim McPhee, ‘89, the secondleading scorer in Bulldogs history; and Hugh Hobus, ‘81.

General admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students under 18. GU students are admitted free with ID.

Bicycling

A Spokane mother and daughter, Brenda and Stevie Gildehaus, the first such combination to win State BMX championships, are among the country’s top riders.

Stevie, 4, is ranked No. 3 in the 5-and-under girls category. Brenda is rated No. 2 in the 26-30-year-old women’s cruiser division by the National American Bicycle Association.

Bowling

Mellody Descoteaux and James Burris have something in common. Both celebrated 300 games.

Descoteaux, a bowler for 20 years, who carries a 181 average in the Pinspinners league at Valley Bowl, registered her first perfect game Oct. 15.

Burris collected his 300 in the Mixed Five league at Lilac Lanes last Monday.

Other major accomplishments in the Pinspinners were turned in by Mike Darnell, who had a 296 game, and Julie Twiss, who had a 706 three-game series.

Jason Daniels, a 14-year-old from Tacoma, stole the show from his Spokane friends by winning the October stop of the Junior Bowlers Tour at Colonial Bowl.

Daniels, who vaulted from ninth to first in the final four games of qualifying, defeated No. 2 qualifier Corey Thomas 225-185 in the title match of the TV-style finals. Brian Long finished third, Ron Bowman fourth and Tim Amann fifth.

Scott Clark had high game for the boys, a 268, and Becky Smith was high for the girls at 226.

College scene

Three Spokane area players continue to make contributions for the seventh-ranked NCAA Division II Seattle Pacific men’s soccer team.

Kenny Thompson, a sophomore forward from Coeur d’Alene, has played in all 15 matches and has one assist; Chad Zlateff, a freshman forward from Gonzaga Prep, has three goals and an assist; and Jim Morton, a freshman forward from Mead, has two goals and two assists.

Football

Three youngsters from Spokane and two from Moses Lake were among the age-group winners at the Spokane area sectional of the NFL/ Gatorade Punt, Pass & Kick competition last weekend at North Central High School.

Age-group winners: 8-Billy May, Moses Lake. 9-Taylor Naff, Kettle Falls. 10-Nathan Schroeder, Spokane. 11-Adam Admire, Spokane. 12-Chad Mathison, Spokane. 13-Robert Clemens, Hayden Lake. 14-Mike Lefebvre, Moses Lake. 15-Scott Wimer, Lewiston.

When all six sectionals are completed, the top five winners in each age group will advance to the Seahawks’ finals Nov. 26 in Seattle.

Wrestling

The North Idaho College Cardinals will conduct an intrasquad scrimmage Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. at Gonzaga Prep.

The fund-raiser for the Bullpups wrestling program costs $2 and features a Cardinals team that is annually among the top junior college programs in the country.
