Margaret Barker Pullman

Memorial service for Margaret Annetta Barker, 92, is set for 3 p.m. today at Simpson United Methodist Church in Pullman.

Mrs. Barker, who died Wednesday, was born in Anamosa, Iowa.

She and her husband, Charles Barker, moved to Pullman from Minneapolis in 1937.

Mrs. Barker had been a teacher in Iowa before she was married.

She was a member of Simpson United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Just a Mere Sewing Club, Exodus, the Pullman Federated Womens Club, the Nature Group of Washington State University Women’s Club, Phi Beta Kappa, and several bridge clubs.

Mrs. Barker read text books onto tapes for blind students at Washington State University.

Her husband, who had been a member of the Washington State University engineering faculty, died in 1979.

She is survived by three sons, Thomas Barker of Seattle, Richard Barker of Germany and James Barker of Fairbanks, Alaska; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Simpson United Methodist Church or Pullman Memorial Hospital Foundation.

Ellen (Kirkwood) Roth Spokane

Funeral Mass for Ellen R. (Kirkwood) Roth, 67, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Otis Orchards. Private burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born near Davenport, Wash., Mrs. Roth died Thursday.

She moved to the Spokane area with her family in 1942.

She had worked as a bookkeeper, most recently at Plywood Distributors in Spokane.

She was a member of Eagles Lodge No. 2 Auxiliary and the Spokane Women’s International Bowling Congress.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Joseph Roth; one daughter, Anne Springer of Otis Orchards; two sisters, Betty Seymour of Otis Orchards and Conni Fredricks of Spokane; two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.

Frances Mullenix Spokane

Graveside service for Frances E. Mullenix, 76, is set for 1 p.m. Tuesday at Marshall Cemetery. Cheney Funeral Chapel is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Mullenix, who was born in Quincy, Wash., died Thursday.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Cheney for 42 years.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Kenneth Mullenix; one son, James Mullenix of Hawaii; one daughter, Carrie Vallance of Spokane; one sister, Emma Hussey of Renton, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

Jack Schoenwald Spokane

Private service for Jack E. Schoenwald, 88, will be held at a later date. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schoenwald, who was born in Deer Park, died Thursday.

He worked in Idaho as a logger for 20 years and moved to Spokane 45 years ago. He became the shop foreman for Ace Concrete Co., and retired in 1973.

He was a member of the International Operating Engineer Local No. 370.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Bessie Schoenwald; three daughters, Nancy Warrington and Joyce Johnson, both of Spokane, and Jackie Caudill of Everett, Wash.; one son, William Schoenwald of Spokane; one sister, Augusta Prouty of Spokane; 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Carmen ‘Geno’ Ross Spokane

Funeral Mass for Carmen Eugene “Geno” Ross III, is planned for 11 a.m. today at Mary Queen Catholic Church. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Heritage Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Geno died Wednesday in a car accident. He was 16.

He was born in Spokane and was a junior at Riverside High School.

He is survived by his mother, Lynn Ross; his father and stepmother, Gene and Glenda Ross; three sisters, Wendy and Sherri Ross, and Korina Pennington; his fiancee Agnes; and his grandparents, Margaret and Carmen Ross Sr., and Peggy and Dan Botnen.

Fred Hemingway Clayton, Wash.

No service will be held for Fred A. Hemingway, 75, at his request. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Hemingway, who died Thursday, was born in Butte, Mont.

He was a retired shop foreman and had lived in Clayton since 1979.

He served in the Air Force during World War II and flew 44 missions over Germany. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and numerous Oak Leaf Clusters.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3067 and the Eagles Lodge No. 3564, both in Deer Park.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Martha; one daughter, Shari Downing of Deer Park; three sisters, Dorothy Lackey of West Linn, Ore., Jean of Bend, Ore., and Betty Wright of West Linn; and one grandson.

Eddie Burns Spokane

Graveside service for Eddie Joseph Burns, 25, will be at 11 a.m. today at Peone Prairie Cemetery.

Mr. Burns, who died Monday while racing his dirt bike, was born in Columbia, Mo.

He worked for Dew Drop Landscaping and had lived in Spokane for seven years.

He is survived by his companion, Glayce Kahuhu of Spokane; his father, Byrle Burns of Spokane; his mother, Judith Burns of Yuma, Ariz.; three sisters, Victoria Nava and Carla Israel, both of Sacramento, Calif., and Bonnie Doran of Fulton, Ill.; and two brothers, Guy and Jeffery Burns, both of Spokane.

Ruben Rivas Spokane

Memorial service for Ruben Herrera Rivas, 30, will be at 2 p.m Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Church rectory. Burial will be at The Resurrection Cemetery in Montebello, Calif.

Born in Mexico, Mr. Rivas was shot and killed Oct. 15.

He had lived in Los Angeles and in Oregon before moving to Spokane 10 years ago.

In Oregon he worked as a jockey.

His work as a jockey ended due to a hip injury, and he continued to exercise horses at race tracks.

He had been involved with La Leyenda Restaurant and after the restaurant closed, he returned to the race track and tried to make a comeback as a jockey.

He is survived by one son, Joshua Rivas of Spokane; his mother, Constantina Rivas of Mount Vernon, Wash.; and one brother Sal Rivas, of Glendale, Calif.

Patrick Schindler Spokane

Funeral Mass for Patrick Anthony Schindler will be at 9 a.m. today at Mount St. Michael Chapel. Burial will follow at Mount St. Michael Cemetery. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Patrick, 17, died Wednesday in a car accident.

He was born in Coeur d’Alene and was a senior at Mount St. Michael Academy. He played basketball and baseball at the school, and worked at Burger King. He refereed basketball and baseball games for the YMCA.

He was a member of Mount Saint Michael Catholic Parish.

He is survived by his parents, James and Ellen Schindler; four brothers, Jim Jr., Joseph, John and Brian Schindler, all at home; five sisters, Kelly Schindler and Sister Shannon Marie Schindler, both of Spokane, Kathy and Krissy Schindler, both at home, and Teresa Shelley of Fife, Wash.; and his grandparents, Ed and Juanita Schindler of Puyallup, Wash.

Dan Sears Spokane

Service for Dan B. Sears, 89, will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Sears, who was born in Moscow, Idaho, died Thursday.

He graduated from Troy (Idaho) High School and then moved to Spokane in 1938.

He worked for Kaiser Aluminum at Trentwood for 22 years, and retired in 1970.

He was a member of the Valley Senior Citizens Center, the Valley Good Sams and the Moose Lodge No. 161.

His wife of 36 years, Lola Sears, died in 1988.

He is survived by two sons, Donald Sears of Germany and Ronald Sears of Springfield, Ore.; one daughter, Geneva Davis of Springfield; four sisters, Dorothy Weber and Martha Zehm, both of Spokane, Clara Hedrick of Moscow and Min Eder of Portland; and eight grandchildren.
