While the world watched whether Canada would begin splitting in two Monday, the U.S. dollar finished mixed against leading currencies.

The dollar strengthened against the German mark, which wasn’t in as much demand as political turmoil in Italy and France subsided. The greenback ended higher against the Japanese yen following see-saw trading throughout the trading day.

Trading in the Mexican peso calmed following a weekend labor and economic accord.
