Japanese Sect Faces Disbanding

Compiled From Wire Services

A court on Monday ordered the disbandment of the religious sect suspected of organizing the nerve gas attack on the Tokyo subway system. The ruling sets the stage for the liquidation of a religious and business empire that has fascinated and frightened the Japanese public.

Aum Shinrikyo, the religious sect, is expected to appeal the ruling. But if a higher court approves the judgment, the sect could be formally dissolved by the end of the year.
