Rapist Among 3 Convicts On Loose After Pickup Driven From Prison

A convicted rapist from Coeur d’Alene who left his victim pregnant escaped from the Idaho state prison on Friday.

Shane McCloskey, 21, and two other escapees remained free Monday. His victim’s relatives say they are concerned he may try to kidnap his infant son.

“We’re very concerned over the baby in this situation,” said the father of the girl McCloskey raped. “We don’t want to see any trouble come of this.”

Officials are tightening policies at the minimum security prison in the wake of Friday’s escape by the unsupervised inmates.

Glen Edward Garity, 25, and William Charles Dorahush, 28 - a child molester and an arsonist/burglar - also remain at large. No major clues have emerged since Friday, said Larry Wright, warden of the South Idaho Correctional Institution.

“I really thought we’d get them by now,” Wright said.

Friday, tracking dogs appeared to be onto something and investigators found a discarded jacket traced to one of the escapees, he said. The state prison has notified sheriff’s offices in Bonner, Kootenai and Madison counties, where the escapees are from.

The three men were cutting scrap metal at the prison farm just outside the minimum-security prison. Before sunrise, they drove a pickup truck off the prison farm site.

Wright said he has stopped allowing inmates to work without direct supervision. Inmates will be screened before work crew assignments resume, he said.

McCloskey has been twice convicted of raping girls. The first time, he was convicted of raping a 14-year-old.

In the most recent incident, he was charged with three counts of rape after he had sex with a 16-year-old girl several times in July and August 1994.

The girl told police that the first time was consensual, but according to a police report he later forced her to have sex.

McCloskey pleaded guilty to one count of rape and was sentenced to 15 years in prison, although he was to be eligible for parole after three years.

The rape left the girl pregnant. The baby is 6 months old, the girl’s father said.

The man said his daughter is in a safe place and McCloskey does not know where she is. He said the family’s safety is not a large concern since McCloskey has never threatened them.

His concern is for the baby. The infant is in the midst of being adopted by another family.

“Shane may come back and try to take the baby,” the victim’s father said. “He’s been unpredictable enough and unscrupulous enough he could mess with this baby’s life. That’s a worst case scenario.”
