Americans Love Their Coupons

Associated Press

It’s been 100 years since shoppers began clipping and redeeming coupons, according to the Promotion Marketing Association of America which tracks industry trends.

The PMAA says 6.2 billion coupons were redeemed last year, more than three times the number redeemed in 1974. But the number redeemed was just a fraction of the 310 billion coupons distributed via newspapers, mailings and other methods.

Seventy-one percent of Americans use coupons on a regular basis.

The most popular item bought with coupons is cereal.
