Boated Shark Bites

Sacramento Bee

Fishing

Cheryl Logan of Gulfport, Miss., caught a 12-pound blacktip shark was fishing in the Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo this summer.

Then the fish got her.

“I gaffed it, brought it aboard (a 24-foot boat) and put it down on the deck,” her husband, Robert, said. “I put my foot on its head to pull out the gaff, and I told Cheryl to put her foot on its tail.”

Cheryl did as asked. When the gaff came loose, so did the shark’s head, slipping out from under Robert’s foot. The shark went berserk.

“It flopped up, came around and bit me on the shin,” Cheryl said.

When the fish was brought to the scales, Cheryl showed the 6-inch bite wound to stunned Rodeo officials.
