Ucla Buries Hurricanes 31-8 In Davis’ Debut

Associated Press

Pac-10

Butch Davis’ debut as head coach at Miami was a disaster Saturday night as Karim Abdul-Jabbar rushed for 180 yards on 29 carries to lead No. 15 UCLA past the 12th-ranked Hurricanes 31-8 in the Rose Bowl at Pasadena, Calif.

The loss was only the fourth in the last 50 regular-season games for the Hurricanes, who entered the 1995 season with a 126-19 record, including bowl games, since 1983.

Abdul-Jabbar, formerly known as Sharmon Shah, scored twice - on a 9-yard run in the third quarter and a 6-yarder with 11:15 left in the game that extended UCLA’s lead to 24-0.

Paul Guidry set up both of Abdul-Jabbar’s TDs with long punt returns.

UCLA blew the game open by scoring two touchdowns in a span of 5:25 of the third quarter to go ahead 17-0.

Miami had only itself to blame for the first TD.

After reaching the Hurricanes’ 42-yard line following the second-half kickoff, UCLA was forced to punt.

Earl Little bobbled Chris Sailer’s kick after it had hit the ground inside the Miami 5, and it rolled into the end zone, where Abdul McCullough fell on it.

A few minutes later, Guidry returned a punt 32 yards to the Miami 40. The Bruins needed only seven plays to score again, this time on Abdul-Jabbar’s first TD run.

Guidry returned a punt 43 yards to the Miami 24 early in the final period to up AbdulJabbar’s other score.

Dan White exploded the idea of the Wildcats as a run-oriented team, throwing four touchdown passes in the first three quarters of a season-opening victory at Tucson, Ariz.

In the second period, senior Jonathan Prasuhn, who had attempted just two field goals in his career, tied a school record and delivered a 20-3 halftime lead with a 57-yard field goal as time expired.

Ricky Whittle scored two touchdowns, the second a game-winning fourth-quarter run from 15 yards out, as the Ducks rallied to beat the Utes at Salt Lake City in a season-opener.

Whittle, who broke around the right end to score unmolested with 10:58 remaining to cap a 73-yard, 14-play drive, also scored in the first period on a 5-yard pass from Tony Graziani.

The victory, the first for new Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti, avenged two straight Ducks losses to the Utes. Last year, Utah upset the eventual Pac-10 champs 34-16 in Eugene.

George Jones rushed for 147 yards and three touchdowns in leading the host Aztecs to a victory over the Golden Bears in the season opener for both teams.

Jones, who carried 24 times and scored each of his TDs on 1-yard runs, set national junior college records last season with six touchdowns in one game and 34 in one season while playing for Bakersfield (Calif.) College.

The Aztecs also upset California last season, winning a 22-20 decision on a 32-yard field goal by Peter Holt on the game’s final play.
