Weekend Launches New Year Of Activities

This weekend marks the start of the new year - not in terms of the calender, but in terms of activities. The week after Labor Day seems to be the kick-off point for fall activities.

Artists help Cancer Patient Care

Cancer Patient Care of Spokane County will hold its fourth-annual Fall Winetaster & Auction Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Glover Mansion, 321 W. Eighth.

Works by well-known Inland Northwest artists will be included in the auction along with merchandise from area businesses.

The more than 30 featured artists include Ken Spiering, Harold Balazs, David Govedare, L.R. Montgomery, Steve Belzman, Stan Miller and Jerry and Rayetta Perrett.

Guests can sample a variety of wines from Caterina Winery along with hors d’oeuvres and desserts.

Tickets are $18 each or $35 per couple. Reservations may be made by calling 456-0446.

Event proceeds will help provide services to low-income families who have exhausted their financial and emotional resources battling cancer.

Cancer Patient Care lends medical equipment, offers breast screening, financial assistance for prescriptions and treatment, family support and home outreach.

Dinner, auction, benefit Girl Scouts

The Girl Scouts Inland Empire Council will hold a western dinner and auction at 9 p.m. Saturday at the Masonic Temple, 1108 W. Riverside. The event is chaired by Beverly Hawker and the Rev. Homer Todd.

A barbecue dinner, western music and dancing, live and silent auctions, raffles and door prizes will be featured in the fund-raising evening for the Girl Scout council.

Mary Ann Duffey of DBA Collectors Showcase will auction off such items as a Las Vegas travel package, 100 spots on Cox Cable’s country-western music station and Nashville Network, three original watercolors by Barbara Coombs, western gift baskets …

The Washington Old-Time Fiddlers will perform and Mark Allen, deejay for KDRX-FM, will play country-western music for dancing.

Tickets, $20, may be purchased at the Girl Scout office, 1402 S. Grand.

Girl Scout registration week is Sept. 11-15. Information flyers are available at elementary schools or by calling the office.

Don’t forget your mallet

A polo match at 2 p.m. Sept. 10 will raise funds for Ferris High School’s senior class. The Ferris band will perform, adding spirit to the event at the polo grounds west of town off the Sunset Highway.

The afternoon will include entertainment, a raffle and special concessions. Gates open at 11:30.

The topic is the Constitution

Helen Marie Frankart, regent for the Daughters of the American Revolution, will discuss the Constitution at a no-host luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Ensign John Monaghan Veterans of Foreign Wars Club, 300 W. Mission.

September is Constitution Month.

Guests are welcome to attend the luncheon. Reservations must be made by calling 838-1502 by Tuesday.

Women Helping Women

Women Helping Women grant applications and guidelines are available for non-profit organizations serving women and children.

Applications may be picked up at the Spokane Public Library’s main branch or at the WHW office, 405 S. Stevens. Completed applications are due by 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5. Recipients will be announced in February.

Women Helping Women has contributed nearly $375,000 since 1993 to aid Spokane County women’s and children’s human service programs.

Time to bone up

Whitworth College will offer a four-session college entrance exam review beginning Saturday, Sept. 23, from 9 a.m. to noon, in Room 214 of Dixon Hall on campus.

Classes will review math and verbal skills, an introduction of the types of questions, reasoning and data interpretations, and simulated time tests.

Cost is $60 before Sept, 16; $70 after that date. The required text book ($15) may be purchased at the first class. To register, or for more information, call 466-3291.

For students further along in their education, Whitworth will offer a non-credit course to prepare for the Graduate Record Exam.

The five-session review will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays, beginning Oct. 16, in Room 203 of the Fine Arts Building.

Development and review of verbal reasoning, reading comprehension and vocabulary skills will be covered, along with arithmetic reasoning, basic algebra and geometry. Interpretation of data skills and general information about the exam will also be presented.

The class will cost $95 before Oct. 9; $105 after. The required textbook ($17) may be purchased at the first session. For more information or to register, call 466-3291.

‘Mr. Basketball’ comes to town

Steve Alford, “Mr. Basketball,” a former National Basketball Association and Indiana University great, will be the featured speaker for Pirate Night II, Whitworth’s athletic fund-raiser on Sept. 14, in the Fieldhouse.

Now head basketball coach at Southwest Missouri State University, Alford was coached by Bobby Knight at Indiana University. He was the Hoosiers’ leading scorer 1984-1987 and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player each year.

The Pirate Night II auction will feature a car, home electronics and vacation packages, including a fly fishing trip to Idaho and a week in Cancun, Mexico.

Events begin at 5:30 with a juice bar and silent auction, followed by dinner.

Tickets are $50 per person, or $500 for businesses to reserve a table for six and be an event sponsor. For reservations, or to make auction donations, call 466-3224.
