WSU Falls Into Women’s Soccer Tie

Sixteen seconds and Wisconsin freshman Lindsay Hoelter were all that stood between the 20th-ranked Washington State women’s soccer team and a second straight victory over the defending Big Ten Conference champions.

That’s all the time that remained in the second overtime period Saturday when Hoelter scored for 12th-ranked Wisconsin to tie the visiting Cougars 2-2 in the season opener for both squads at Madison, Wis.

Six freshmen started the match for second-year WSU head coach Lisa Gozley and eight freshmen were on the field after senior midfielder Dana DePonzi left the match with an injury.

“With DePonzi out, eight freshmen on the field and Jody Payne forced to play four different positions, I thought we had the worst possible game scenario, but psychologically we never quit,” Gozley said.

Gozley was also without senior marking back Suzanne Fulcher, who was forced to sit out after the red card she received during the Cougars’ final match of the 1994 season.

Wisconsin played with 10 starters from a season ago.

“I know now that we have talent and that we have a lot of it, but we have to gain experience and correct some of our mistakes,” said Gozley, whose Cougars knocked Wisconsin out in the first round of last year’s NCAA Tournament.

Junior defender Tari Beck broke a 1-1 tie 7 minutes into the first overtime with an unassisted goal.

The teams played to a scoreless first half. Cougars freshman Kimberly Schelpf opened the scoring as she took a pass from Jeniffer Brosseau and knocked a shot past Ursula McKnight, the 1994 Big Ten goalkeeper of the year.

The Badgers answered in the 73rd minute with a goal from midfielder Marci Miller.

The Whitworth College men tied Evergreen State 2-2 at the Evergreen State Tournament in Olympia, scoring the final two goals during its first match of the season.

Jake Benson and Chris Husby scored for Whitworth, and Matt Yoeman made 11 saves.

The Pirates play Western Washington at 2 p.m. today. The WWU women beat Whitworth 2-0 Saturday.

In West Coast Conference play at Portland, the Pilots defeated Gonzaga 12-0.
