Indians End ‘95 Season With 12th-Inning Loss To Yakima

The Spokane Indians and Yakima Bears just couldn’t get enough of each other and the 1995 season.

The two started the season together at Yakima and finished it up there Sunday night. And just like when they started, Yakima won it in extra innings.

In howling winds accompanied with a steady downpour of rain, Yakima’s Juan Hernaiz got an infield single to drive in Ken Morimoto from third to give the Bears a 5-4 win the bottom of the 12th inning.

With Everett’s 4-3 win against Bellingham, Everett finished the season with a 37-39 record to claim second-place in the Northwest League’s North Division. The Indians finished the season at 36-40.

As far as Sunday was concerned, though, the Bears stranded 18 base runners and trailed Spokane 4-0 early, Spokane committed four errors. The most costly was charged to relief pitcher Jose Santiago whose pickoff attempt of Morimoto sailed into the dugout allowing Morimoto to advance to third. After Sosa was intentionally walked, Hernaiz got the gamewinning hit. Morimoto finished the game 4-for-7.

Since Spokane’s championship season of 1990, its 36 wins this season was the most it had won in a season since 1993 when the Indians won 35 games.
