Dollar Drifts Lower In Quiet Trading

The dollar fell against most major currencies in listless trading Tuesday as dealers returning from the holiday weekend in the United States were greeted with little news to drive the market.

Barring unforeseen events, traders say there’s little on the horizon to move the dollar until U.S. inflation figures are released next week.

In late New York trading, the dollar was quoted at 97.50 Japanese yen, down from 97.55 late Friday. The currency fell to 1.4615 German marks in New York from 1.4638 on Friday.

U.S. currency markets were closed Monday for Labor Day. The dollar traded overseas Monday, but dealers said the action was uneventful.
