Youth Commission Needs Your Energy

Get involved: It’s about that time of year when the Chase Youth Commission once again opens up positions for the Teen Advisory Committee.

High school students who possess creative energy, leadership skills and time are encouraged to apply.

Monthly meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month. Committee members also will be asked to sit on other advisory boards for commission projects, such as KidsWeek, the Chase Youth Awards and Family Affair.

Applications are available in your high school counseling office. Deadline for applications is Sept. 21. Carisa White, Lakeside

AIDS quilt:The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt is coming to Spokane in April 1996 and it needs your help to get here!

In case you haven’t already heard, the quilt was begun in 1987 by Cleve Jones, founder of the NAMES project. He made the first quilt panel for a friend who died of AIDS. Now, family and friends of AIDS patients around the nation create their own memorial panels to add to the quilt.

It has toured the country several times and was last in Spokane two years ago. It’s now 31,000 panels and growing.

The host committee needs help from now until April while the quilt is here, to help set it up and take it down.

Get the scoop:Ever want to produce your own news show? Now’s your chance to live the dream with the CNN Student Video Journalist Challenge, open to all middle and high school students across the nation.

Beginning Sept. 1 and continuing through Dec. 1, 1995, this program encourages students to explore video production and invites schools to form teams to produce and submit a two-minute news story on hard news, sports or lifestyle.

Judged by a panel of television journalists and educators, 12 production teams will be selected as regional winners. The prizes are great, such as $1,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to the CNN center in Atlanta, Ga., in February.
