Seasonal Hiring Prospects Look Good

Almost a third of Spokane’s companies plan to expand their staffs during the rest of the year, according to Manpower Inc.

Twenty-nine percent of the companies surveyed in Manpower’s quarterly Employment Outlook Survey said they will add to their payrolls during the final quarter of the year. Ten percent said they will reduce staffing, and 58 percent said they would make no adjustment.

Manpower representative Tom Droz said the results show typical seasonal expectations as many companies staff up for the holidays.

In Manpower’s third-quarter survey for the Spokane area, 16 percent of the companies surveyed said they would increase staffing, while 10 percent anticipated reductions.

During the fourth quarter a year ago, 33 percent expected to increase personnel and 7 percent said they would cut back.

Droz said the survey indicates that hiring prospects are most promising this fall in the following employment sectors: construction, durable goods manufacturing, transportation/public utilities, wholesale/retail trade and finance/ insurance/real estate. Cutbacks are projected in education and public administration, while mixed intentions are reported in services.
