Gsl At A Glance

Mead 27, Rogers 0

Turning point

Despite a steady rain, quarterback Jason Lewis hit GSL sprint champion Matt Sturm in stride on the Panthers’ second play and Mead opened a 7-0 lead just 5 minutes into the game.

Stars of the game

Lewis, in his first varsity start, completed six of eight passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns, including a 31-yarder to Adam Morris. Morris touched the ball four times in the first half, two runs and two receptions, for more than 100 yards, finishing with 75 yards in four catches and 70 yards on six carries. Scott McGlocklin 10 times for 104 yards.

Mead’s big-play offense stunned Rogers, which couldn’t counter with its grind-it-out offense. Besides the two big scoring passes, Larry Carnahan scored on a 28-yard run and McGlocklin had runs of 29 and 20 yards in a seven-play, 65-yard drive that ended with Morris’ 1-yard plunge late in the third quarter…. Mead rushed for 279 yards on 37 attempts while Rogers had one more attempt and picked up just 89 yards. Ryan Hill had 77 yards on 27 carries for the Pirates…. The Panthers added 143 yards in the air with sophomore Nate Adams at quarterback in the fourth quarter, connecting on two of three attempts…. … Rogers alternated quarterbacks with sophomore Jeff Mace playing the first and fourth quarters and junior Danny Cuculich the middle two…. Cuculich completed the only pass, a 20-yarder to Sean Dainty in the third quarter.

Next opponent

Rogers meets LC in next Friday’s 5:45 game at Albi with Mead playing Central Valley in the 8:30 game.

Ferris 44, Shadle Park 24

Turning point

Ferris safety Tim Benton hammered Joe Walters inches from a first down on a fake-punt pass play late in the first quarter for an emotional boost that carried the Saxons.

Stars of the game

Benton was virtually unstoppable, averaging almost 20 yards a carry, rushing 13 times for 257 yards, the fourth highest single-game effort in city history. He was also a defensive stalwart from his free safety position. In his first start, junior quarterback Justin Bursch completed five or eight passes for 126 yards, including a 67-yard strike to Jonathan Parker seconds before halftime.

Although Shadle Park was only 1-6-1 last year, the most points the Highlanders allowed was 34. However, the most points they scored last year was 13…. Benton had 150 yards rushing at halftime…. Shawn Kingsbury had 102 yards on 20 carries for Shadle Park…. The Highlanders’ full-house backfield prompted Ferris coach Clarence Hough to say, “Credit Shadle Park, that offense is tough to defend … you can’t find the football.”… Even after Benton’s first run, the highlanders came back to score and take a 12-7 lead.

Next opponent

Both teams play again Thursday, Shadle Park against Gonzaga Prep at 5 p.m. and Ferris against University at 7:30. Both games will be at Albi Stadium.
