Winnifred Smith Coeur d’Alene

Visitation for Winnifred C. Smith, 95, will be today from 3-8 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Service will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith, who was born in Decatur, Mich., died Monday at Pinewood Care Center in Coeur d’Alene.

Arriving in St. Maries by train and then traveling in moonlight by boat, she moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1919 with her family. She later graduated from Cheney Normal School in 1923 and taught school in Sandpoint for five years.

She returned to Coeur d’Alene in 1928 and married Rollin Smith. He died in 1970.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Coeur d’Alene, where she taught Sunday school for many years and was active in the Women’s Circle.

Survivors include two sons, Rollin Smith of Redding, Calif., and Warren Smith of Otis Orchards; one daughter, Rita Clodius of San Jose, Calif.; one sister, Marian Wyman of Coeur d’Alene; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church or Heritage Place in Coeur d’Alene.

Joseph Barry Sandpoint

Visitation for Joseph Boyd Barry, 93, will be today from 1-6 p.m. at Coffelt’s Moon Chapel in Sandpoint. Inurnment will be later in Las Vegas, Nev. Coffelt Funeral Service of Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Barry, who was born on the Pawnee Indian Reservation in the Oklahoma Territory, died Monday in Sandpoint.

He moved west with his family and settled in Athol, Idaho, where, in 1919, he was one of five members of the first graduating class of Athol High School.

He later moved to Montana and married Blanche Reynolds in 1920.

Mr. Barry worked in Eastern Montana as a teacher and mail carrier and helped build the Fort Peck Dam. In 1936 he settled in Coeur d’Alene and later moved to the Dover, Idaho, area.

During World War II, he lived in Spokane and worked in the heavy construction business. He had also worked construction in California before retiring in 1963.

He later moved to Las Vegas and returned to Sandpoint this summer to celebrate his 75th wedding anniversary.

Mr. Barry enjoyed woodworking, fishing and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Survivors include his wife, of Las Vegas; two sons, Wayne of Orland, Calif., and Del of Las Vegas; daughters, Gail Barry of Elk and Lou Ellen Jacobson of Sandpoint; one brother, John Barry of Oklahoma; one sister, Marie Brockway of Spokane; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Mary Bable Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Graveside service for Mary “Marie” Bable, 81, will be today at 11 a.m. at Grandview Cemetery in Bonners Ferry. Bonners Ferry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bable, who was born in West Virginia, died Wednesday after an extended illness.

She received her education in West Virginia and lived in Gary, Ind., for several years. In the early 1940s she moved to California, where she worked for the Douglas Aircraft Co. during World War II.

She married Earle Bable in Carson City, Nev., in 1948.

She moved to Bonners Ferry in 1971.

Mrs. Bable was active in the First Baptist Church in California and was also a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed traveling and gardening.

She was preceded in death by one son, Edward, and one sister.

Survivors include her husband, at home; one daughter, Patti Michalk of Bonners Ferry; one brother, Frank Schuller; one sister, Helen Dankovich; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Paul Gruber Sandpoint

Private family service for Paul William Gruber, 53, will be at a later date. Coffelt Funeral Service of Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gruber, who died in January 1994, was a victim of homicide. His body was found last month at his home near Muskrat Lake in rural Bonner County.

He was born in Marathon County, Wis., and graduated from the University of Nevada in 1965 with a major in French. He later received his master’s degree in French from the University of Geneva in Switzerland.

Mr. Gruber was a longtime resident of Lake Tahoe, Nev., and taught school there at Incline High School until his retirement in 1989.

He moved to the Sandpoint area in 1993.

Mr. Gruber had traveled around the world and visited every continent except Antarctica. He was also a member of Sigma Nu fraternity.

Survivors include one son, Kerry Gruber; one daughter, Shellie Kepley; one brother, Bob Gruber of Arizona; one sister, Nancy Davis of Florida; and three grandchildren.

Frederick Volberding Spokane

No service will be held for Frederick W. Volberding, 90, at his request. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Volberding, who was born in Lake Park, Iowa, died Monday.

He moved to Spokane from Portland 50 years ago. He worked as a mechanic at Central Pre-Mix before retiring in 1970.

He is survived by one daughter, Betty Damm of Spokane; one brother, two sisters, four grandsons, three great-grandsons and six great-granddaughters.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

Harley Rickman Spokane

Vigil service for Harley J. Rickman, 80, is planned for 7 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Cremation will follow.

Mr. Rickman, who died Monday, was born in Kennewick. He moved to Spokane in 1941.

He worked as a millwright for Kaiser Aluminum for 31 years. He retired in 1978.

Mr. Rickman, who served in the Army during World War II, was a member of Manito Masonic Lodge and the Order of Amaranth.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jean Rickman; two daughters, Helen Connor of Deer Island, Ore., and Linda Thomas of Seattle; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Marcella Jones Spokane

Graveside service for Marcella L. Jones is planned for 10:30 a.m. today at Riverside Memorial Park with memorial service following at noon at Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Jones, who died Saturday, was born in Raymond, Ohio.

She had worked as a schoolteacher in Ohio and moved to Spokane in 1948. She was part owner of Colburn’s Gallery and retired in the mid-1980s.

Mrs. Jones was a member of Manito Presbyterian Church, the YWCA board of directors, PEO, a philanthropic and educational organization, and Terrace Garden Club.

Her husband, Willard Jones, died in 1976.

She is survived by four sons, David and Peter Jones, both of Seattle, Russell Jones of Spokane and Jeffery Jones of Tustin, Calif.; one brother, Elwood Russell of Marysville, Ohio; and five grandchildren.

Helen Kersul Spokane

Service for Helen C. Kersul, 83, is planned for 11 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Kersul, who was born in La Crosse, Wis., died Tuesday.

She had lived in Spokane for more than 76 years and had been a camp counselor for the Salvation Army, a hairdresser, and a seamstress for Pacific Trail. She was also a homemaker.

She is survived by one daughter, Corrine Becker, and one son, George Kersul, both of Spokane; one sister, Arlene Harder of Spokane; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or the Spokane Humane Society.

Madge McCarthy Colville, Wash.

Service for Madge Marcelle McCarthy, 79, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville. Burial will follow at Mountain View Park Cemetery.

Mrs. McCarthy, who died Monday, was born in Sedgwick, Colo.

In 1933 she moved to the Echo Valley near Colville with her parents. She and her husband, Melvin, farmed in Echo Valley.

Her husband died in 1984 and Mrs. McCarthy lived on their farm until several years ago, when she moved into Colville.

She was a member of the Colville Valley Grange, the Colville Valley Home Ec Club, the 4-H Club and the Jessie Webb Center.

She is survived by two sons, Kevin McCarthy of Colville and Pat McCarthy of Red Lion, Pa.; one daughter, LaVohn Floyd of Daisy, Wash.; one brother, Dale Villers of Colville; one sister, Pauline Lefler of Lebanon, Ore.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
