Arizona Player Dies

Compiled From Wire Services

While his family, teammates and coaches grieved over the death of University of Arizona football player Damon Terrell, authorities sought to determine the cause.

Terrell, 21, died Thursday afternoon at University Medical Center, where he had been hospitalized since collapsing Aug. 10 during a preseason football conditioning drill. Surgeons removed his damaged spleen Aug. 11.

Doctors later said his kidneys sustained irreversible damage.

Only in July, Terrell’s infant son, Brandon Marcel Terrell, died after being hospitalized for nearly a year because of complications since birth.

Terrell’s parents, Ricky and Linda Terrell, asked the university and University Medical Center not to release information about his death. And on returning home to Los Angeles, they declined to speak by telephone.

After a quick trip to Asotin County, Boise State quarterback Tony Hilde, 21, has resolved his legal troubles and is scheduled to be the Broncos’ starter in the season opening football game tonight in Logan, Utah, against Utah State.

University of Nebraska football player Riley Washington was ordered to stand trial on a charge of attempted second-degree murder.

After receiving a letter from the NCAA, Southern Cal officials reiterated that star receiver Keyshawn Johnson will play in the Trojans’ opener against San Jose State. The NCAA is conducting an inquiry into an allegation that, while a junior college student, Johnson accepted a loan from a sports agent, ostensibly a violation of NCAA rules.
