Carnival Is Going Ahead, Rain Or Shine

The weather was downright nasty earlier this week, and that left folks at Opportunity Presbyterian Church a tad concerned.

The church’s first annual Super Saturday carnival starts at 9 a.m. today. It will be held at the church, 202 N. Pines Road.

“I hope it’s nice, because this sure is terrible,” church spokeswoman Jane Hussey said Thursday, when a thunderstorm hit the Valley.

The carnival lasts until noon, and organizers plan to pack a lot into those three hours. Barney the purple dinosaur will be there. Not quite Jurassic, but antique nonetheless will be cars brought by local members of the Model T Ford Club of America.

There will be more contemporary four-wheelers, too - Spokane Raceway Park will have some dragsters on hand, Valley Fire District will have a fire engines there and the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department will bring its D.A.R.E. car.

The carnival is more than just cars, though. There will be clowns, balloon animals and door prizes.

KDRK radio will broadcast live from the event, and country music will be performed by Billy Reynolds.

“He really honestly sounds like Willy Nelson,” Hussey said.

Admission is free. The only thing that costs money is the food. It’s a bargain, though - hot dogs and soft drinks are each 50 cents, and chips go for 25 cents per bag.

What’s the reason for the event? Hussey said it’s just a way to let people know about Opportunity Presbyterian.

“We’ve never done it before, but we’re hoping we can show people we’re a fun place to be, and that we have lots of things for the kids,” Hussey said.

As for weather, even if it lets loose, all isn’t lost.

“We have a covered patio area and a gym,” she said. “So, Barney will just go inside.”
