Inmates Go Fishing, Then Get Caught

From Staff And Wire Reports

Two inmates got less than they angled for recently when a sheriff’s deputy snagged their plan to sneak cigarettes into the Spokane County Jail.

The inmates had arranged to throw a homemade fishing line over the edge of the jail’s fourth floor exercise floor on Sept. 1.

Three girls, ages 16 and 17, waited outside near the entrance below, prepared to attach a bag of cigarettes, tobacco and rolling papers to the line.

Another inmate saw what was happening and contacted Deputy Eric Nelson, who went outside and halted the transfer.

The three teens were arrested on charges of attempting to introduce contraband into a jail. They were released to parents or relatives.

Deputies went to the exercise area and found two inmates who acknowledged they hatched the scheme for nicotine.

They fashioned the line by unraveling elastic thread from the waistbands of jail underwear, a sheriff’s office spokesman said. , DataTimes
