Separated Twin Dies; Sister Released

Compiled From Wire Services

One of two girls who were born joined at the head and separated in a rare operation died on Friday.

Doctors had said all along that 3-1/2-month-old Nichelle Tejeda would die because of a herpes infection contracted in the womb. It had destroyed vital organs.

The twins were born to Alicia Tejeda on May 15. Surgeons separated them in a 13-hour operation Aug. 23 at St. David’s Hospital.

Nichelle’s sister Michelle was released from the hospital Friday.
