De La Hoya Wins By A Nose

Compiled From Wire Services

Oscar De La Hoya retained his WBO lightweight title at Caeser’s Palace in Las Vegas when Genaro Hernandez quit after the sixth round with blood flowing from an apparently broken nose.

In a fight that followed De La Hoya’s victory, former two-time world champion James Toney won for the 48th time as a pro when Ernest Mateen was disqualified for continued illegal blows in the fifth round of their light heavyweight fight.

Ireland’s Steve Collins retained his WBO super-middleweight title after a split-decision win over England’s Chris Eubank in Millstreet, Ireland.
