Get A Hunch, Bet A Bunch

By The Spokesman-Review

One thing about later racing dates and shorter seasons is that stakes horses and their trainers get right down to business.

Today’s 47th Inland Empire Speed Handicap has a field that would have flattered last October. Che Meza, last year’s winner, is only one of several contenders.

No Small Buzz, runner-up in the 1994 Spokane Derby, hasn’t won in five tries this year, but he’s been very close with better than these. Barzana Dana, as well as I’m Slew and Halo Passer, both among last year’s top sophomores, also have a shot.

Lightly raced Adventure Road is an intriguing possibility, if for no other reason than a 1994 speed rating of 90 at Gulfstream Park.

Here are today’s selections:

$5 daily double pairing SISTER CHARLENE in the first race with DREAM ONE in the second and $2 daily doubles teaming MS TORADAR and APRIL JAZZ with DREAM ONE. ($9).

THIRD: $5 quinellas pairing HONORABLE MOON with ALLIHAVONZTHERADIO and SWEET CITY SLEW ($10).

FOURTH: $10 to win, $10 to place on SNOWY MOUNTAIN SAM. Parlay any winnings, win and place, to SPOOK EYE ONE in the fifth.

SIXTH: $10 to win on SILVER COVE.

EIGHTH: $10 to win on NO SMALL BUZZ and $5 quinella baseball combining NO SMALL BUZZ, ADVENTURE ROAD and BARZANA DANA ($15).

TENTH: $1 trifectas wheeling HECOULDTELL to HICKORY STICK, SENOR SLEW and RUNNIN TEE JAY ($6).

Original bankroll: $2,000.

Friday’s results: Lost $41.

Present bankroll: $1,961.
