Retro Fashions Take Center Stage

Los Angeles Daily News

It could have been the ‘60s Sunday night as beehive hair, cat’s-eye makeup, sequins and bright colors made a fashionable comeback for the 47th annual Emmy Awards.

Stars glammed up in low-cut gowns, coiffed in styles that required hairpins and heavy-duty lacquer, and dripping in borrowed diamonds.

Leading the retro fashion parade were Lisa Kudrow of “Friends” in a gold halter gown by Debra McGuire with matching sunglasses, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus of “Seinfeld,” who got a big crowd reaction in a slinky velvet Armani gown with a V-neckline that plunged to the navel.

Sela Ward of “Sisters” also went for vintage glam in a boat-necked black-velvet gown with a red-and-black cut-velvet stole by Pamela Barish, a hip new Los Angeles designer recently nominated for California’s Rising Star Award. Gail O’Grady from “NYPD Blue” got catcalls for a slinky gold sequin sheath by Escada.

Most men wore variations on the traditional black tuxedo, but David Duchovny of “The X-Files” got in the spirit of the event and suited up in a Carnaby Street-inspired brocade jacket.

Thumbing their noses at the fashion police and opting for color where basic black usually rules were Helen Hunt of “Mad About You” in a red crepe Calvin Klein gown, and Heather Locklear, whose pink halter dress featured ruffles at the neck.

Teri Hatcher of “Lois & Clark” wore a clingy silver satin gown, while Courteney Cox of “Friends” favored a silvery lilac number and a new ‘60s shag haircut.

Candice Bergen, star of “Murphy Brown,” looked elegant as always in an ivory Armani cocktail suit, while Anjelica Huston appeared matronly in her ivory satin dress and matching coat.

Christine Baranski, who plays the fashion-victim friend in “Cybill,” was dressed to the teeth in Chanel, from her $500,000 diamond necklace to her strapless gown with a leather bustier.

Most of the remaining crowd played it safe in black with plenty of cleavage, including Tori Spelling, who spilled out of her skin-tight sheath with a spider-web bead design on her back, Jennifer Aniston of “Friends” in a strapless gown and Sharon Lawrence of “NYPD Blue,” whose dress dipped low enough to reveal glittery bra cups.
