Dollar Treads Water

The dollar turned mixed against major currencies Monday without fresh economic data or other stimuli to guide it.

Analysts said fears of central bank intervention were a cloud over the market, also inhibiting serious movement.

On Friday, the dollar at one point rose above 100 yen for the first time since January when the Bank of Japan halved its discount rate and intervened heavily in the open market, buying dollars and selling yen.

But there was no such stimulus Monday.

“People are positive on the dollar, but you’re not seeing new positions,” said Lisa Finstrom, a currency analyst at Smith Barney Inc.
