Teen Awarded $10,000 After Expulsion Over Scarf

Associated Press

A court awarded $10,000 on Tuesday to a Muslim teenager who was expelled from school for wearing a head scarf in class.

Salwa Ait Hamad, 15, was expelled June 8 from Haut de Penoy junior high school in Vandoeuvre for refusing to obey an order to leave her head uncovered.

Salwa, born in France but of Moroccan origin, cited religious convictions in covering her head.
