U.S. Will Monitor Imported Grain

From Staff And Wire Reports

U.S. officials said Tuesday that they will continue to monitor Canadian grain imports, appeasing wheat growers who feared that they would be buried in Canadian wheat, barley and corn.

The action came the day that officials lifted a one-year cap limiting annual Canadian grain shipments to 1.5 million tons. Prior to the quota, Canada had shipped up to 2.4 million tons of grain in one year.

U.S. Trade Representative Mickey Kantor said officials will continue to monitor Canadian imports on a regular basis during the next 12 months. U.S. officials will restore the cap, he said, if Canada exceeds the 1.5 million-ton level.
