G-Prep 21, Shadle Park 14

Turning point

An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Highlanders after the first-half clock expired was assessed on their second-half kickoff. Prep turned the field position into a two-play, 43-yard drive, capped by sophomore quarterback Kevin O’Connell’s 32-yard run. Shadle Park never recovered. Stars of the game

The Gonzaga Prep defense, beaten badly the last half of the second quarter, held Shadle Park to 15 yards net offense and no first downs in five second-half possessions. Meanwhile, the offensive line did a better job blocking and Chris Barton ran for 126 yards on 13 carries.

Notable

After Prep’s go-ahead touchdown, Shadle Park fumbled on the first play and Rex Mangiaracina recovered for the Bullpups on the 21. The Highlanders held on downs but they couldn’t generate anything on offense. On the punt from the 13, the snap went through Tim Snell’s legs. When he picked up the ball in the end zone, he tried to pass it. The ball was tipped by an offensive lineman behind the line of scrimmage. That resulted in an “illegal touch” penalty, a 5-yarder and loss of down, giving Prep the ball on the 5. Three plays later, McConnell scored on a 1-yard keeper for a 24-14 lead. … Prep scored the game’s first touchdown when a snap for a punt went through Snell’s legs and Prep’s Corey Malone recovered in the end zone midway through the opening quarter. … The Highlanders put together a smart 80-yard, 11-play drive to score 3:13 before the half. They did it by getting outside the Bullpup defense with quick pitches, Joe Walters going the last 8 yards. Prep was 3 and out on the next possession, and after the punt, Kris Walters made two great fakes, dropped back and found his brother Joe wide open at the 20 for a 46-yard scoring play and a 14-10 Highlanders lead a minute before halftime.

U-Hi 38, Ferris 27

Turning point

University wide receiver Kurt Moore sprinted up the left sideline and hauled in a 24-yard pass from Casey Cornelius, then slipped a tackle, cut inside and scrambled through the defense for a 57-yard gain to the Ferris 22. The play sparked the Titans, who were facing a third-and-11 from their 21 after Ferris had finally scored to cut the difference to 17-7.

Stars of the game

Tim Buchanan had 143 yards rushing and Jason Daniel had 134 for the Titans and sparked a defense that kept Ferris’ standout back Tim Benton in check.

Notable

The Titans had 132 yards rushing in the first half, a total they exceeded only twice last year in full games. Their 236 yards of total offense was only exceeded twice. The Titans finished with 317 yards rushing and 514 yards in total offense, surpassing numbers they weren’t close to in the last two years. …
