Abu-Jamal’s Request For New Trial Rejected

Compiled From Wire Services

A common pleas judge Friday rejected death row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal’s request for a new trial.

Abu-Jamal, a black activist and former radio reporter, asked for a new trial on the grounds that he was framed and had an incompetent trial attorney. He was convicted in 1982 for the 1981 murder of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner.

Abu-Jamal’s lawyers said they expected to file an appeal with the state supreme court next week.
