Gsl At A Glance

LC 3, Rogers 0

Key play

With Rogers facing a third-and-goal from the 8, LC linebacker Nate Smith popped running back Ryan Hill just after Donny CuCulich’s pass arrived. Hill bobbled the ball and Dealy Etter snagged it to save the game for the Tigers with 4:27 to play.

Stars of the game

Smith keyed a defense, embarrassed a week earlier, that held Rogers to 68 net rushing yards and 75 passing. “A lot of it was emotional,” Smith said. “Last week we tried to do too much. …. (The coaches) cut the defense down and just let us play.”

Notable

The Tigers scored after one of the few big plays in the game. Rogers only netted 20 yards on a punt from its 5 and LC quarterback Paul Mencke went around right end on the next play for 17 yards. That was it, however, and Matt Stuckle kicked a 24-yard field goal. … Rogers only crossed midfield twice, once in each half. The first time was on a 43-yard pass from CuCulich to Steve Silva that put the ball on the LC 49. … The last 3-0 game in the league was when University beat Mead in the 1979 season opener.

Next opponent

LC tackles Mead in Thursday’s 7:30 game at Albi. Rogers opens Friday’s Albi doubleheader at 5:45 against Ferris.

CV 27, Mead 19

Key play

CV quarterback R.J. DelMese hit Rick Giampietri for an 11-yard gain and a first down at the 35 with 4 minutes to play, allowing the Bears to use more than 2 minutes before punting to Mead with 1:42 left. The Jason Lewis-to-Adam Morris combination took Mead from its 24 to the CV 22 with 30 seconds to go before Lewis misfired four times. After two knockdowns by the CV line, Bob Perkes flattened Lewis as he passed, putting the game on one final play.

Stars of the game

Many, but the two players who deserve to be singled out are Giampietri and Morris. Morris, who was questionable with a sore shoulder, caught five passes for 79 yards and ran for 53 yards on five carries. Giampietri, CV’s versatile back who had a separated shoulder in the preseason, was playing almost full time both ways by the second half. He didn’t touch the ball offensively in the first half but was forced to make an open-field tackle - leading with his left, non-injured shoulder. “We needed him to settle us down in the secondary,” his father and coach Rick Sr. said. “I had no plans of using him (at free safety). He’s like the quarterback out there.”

Notable

CV had not beaten Mead since 1985. The teams tied in 1988. … Georgio Usai, who had 285 yards against LC last week, added another 183. … There were no penalties in the first half. The first one came 4:38 into the third quarter when a Mead player interfered with a CV player trying to field a punt. CV got a 5-yarder two plays later. … CV played without its exceptional sophomore nose guard Will Beck. An old back injury was discovered during the week. His status is unknown.

Next opponent

CV has its Valley rivalry against University at U-Hi Friday at 7:30. Mead meets LC in Thursday’s second Albi game at 7:30.
