Events Commemorate Progress Toward Independence By Disabled Americans

This is National Rehabilitation Week.

The event not only commemorates the 49 million disabled Americans and the progress they’ve made toward independence, but it also salutes rehabilitation and the health care professionals behind it.

St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute, which opened during National Rehabilitation Week last year, has a number of activities scheduled this week, all in Room 200.

Today, from 1-4 p.m., St. Luke’s will conduct a workshop for teachers, counselors and principals to better prepare schools for students making the transition from rehabilitation to the classroom.

On Tuesday, experts will speak to physicians and health care professionals on traumatic brain injuries. The lecture is from noon to 1:30 p.m.

For Wednesday, the institute, in conjunction with Associated Industries, will conduct a workshop dealing with stress management and ergonomics.

Finally, on Thursday, 4 to 6 p.m., St. Luke’s will host a patient-reunion celebration, highlighting patient success stories. Patients, families, friends, physicians and health-care professionals are invited to attend.

St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute is located at 711 S. Cowley.

Attention men

As part of National Prostate Cancer Awareness Week, free prostate screenings for men over 50 who have not been examined for prostate cancer or had prostate cancer, will be provided by Spokane hospitals and physicians Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Screenings will be done on-site at Holy Family and Sacred Heart and off-site by Deaconess Medical Center, 459-4995; Holy Family, 482-2254; or Sacred Heart Cancer and Research Center, 622-2123.

Kick the habit

On Tuesday, Holy Family Hospital Women’s Center, along with the American Cancer Society, will sponsor “Fresh Start,” a clinic to help people quit smoking.

The program is free. For times, registration and other information, call 482-2477.
