Sutton Fires Course-Record 61 To Win B.C. Open; Pullman’s Triplett Finishes Tied For Third
Hal Sutton shot a course-record 61 Sunday to rally from five strokes back and win the $1 million B.C. Open in Endicott, N.Y., by a stroke over Jim McGovern.
Sutton made 11 birdies and one bogey in the final round of his eighth PGA Tour victory and first since the 1986 Memorial.
Sutton finished with a 15-under 269 total on the En-Joie golf course and collected $180,000.
McGovern had a final-round 63 and was one shot ahead of Pullman’s Kirk Triplett and Craig Stadler. Triplett had a 66 and Stadler a 67 Sunday. U.S. Ryder Cup member Jay Haas, who shot a 64, and Stewart Clink, who had a finalround 65, were at 272.
Patty Sheehan won the LPGA Safeco Classic in Kent, Wash., for the third time, the 34th victory in her 16-year career, holding off a final-round challenge from rookie Emilee Klein on Sunday.
Sheehan shot a 1-under-par 71 for a 14-under 274 total.
Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho had a final round 73 for a total of 289.
In Indianapolis, Simon Hobday capped a 4-under-par 68 with a 3-foot bogey putt to win the Brickyard Crossing Championship senior event by one stroke to avoid a six-way playoff.
First-round leader Ray Floyd and Bruce Summerhays were at 204.
Jeff Gove hit the flagstick with his tee shot on the second hole of a playoff with Franklin Langham to set up his winning 18-inch birdie putt in the Nike TriCities Open in Richland, Wash.
Mark Rohde from Spokane finished with a threeday total of 219.
