Uninspired Dollar Slips

The dollar fell against the yen Monday in lackluster trading ahead of this week’s long awaited Japanese government plan to stimulate the country’s economy.

The dollar also fell against most of the major currencies. But its fall against the yen was guided by uncertainty over the magnitude of the Japanese package and to what extent the Bank of Japan might try to bolster the dollar after its release contributed to the uneventful trading.

“The market is trading sideways,” said Peggy Reed, a vice president at Credit Agricole. “It’s uninspiring.”
