Panhandle Picks With Greg Lee

At this rate I’m going to be difficult to catch. I posted my first shutout of the season, as I correctly predicted all 11 games last week.

Last week’s guest, Kellogg athletic director Ralph “The Toe” Lowe, missed just one pick. After all, he couldn’t pick against his own Wildcats, who fell 17-6 to Lakeland.

Heading into the fourth week - drum roll please - the scoreboard reads: Lee 28-4 (.875), Guests 24-8 (.750).

My guest this week, Sandpoint principal A.C. Woolnough, thinks he can cut into my lead.

Woolnough says A.C. is his legal name. But I suspect it’s either short for Always Correct or Ambush Coeur d’Alene (Sandpoint’s longtime Inland Empire League rival).

Game of the Week

Last year, Post Falls came oh-so-close to snapping its losing streak to Lewiston.

The 1994 Bengals - who coach Nick Menegas called his least talented team ever at Lewiston - pulled off a 14-13 victory at Post Falls. It was Lewiston’s 16th straight win over the Trojans since the schools started playing in 1980.

The Bengals’ fast start this season has Lewiston faithful thinking about another State A-1 Division II championship (the Bengals won state two years ago).

Common sense says Lewiston should win, especially since the game is at Lewiston.

And if I wanted to protect my lead I’d take Lewiston. But you can have all the couldas, shouldas and wouldas. For a second straight year I’m taking the Trojans.

I can’t really explain why except to say all streaks come to an end. Post Falls 16, Lewiston 15.

Guest: The Bengals know how to bite. Lewiston 28, Post Falls 14.

Lakeland at Coeur d’Alene: The Viks could easily be 3-0 instead of 1-2, and their talents were evident against overmatched Deer Park last week.

Like CdA, Lakeland finally posted its first win last week. The question still lingers: How good are the Viks and Hawks as they head into what’s believed to be their first meeting?

My guess is these teams are fairly even. But the Viks will prevail at home. CdA 24, Lakeland 13.

Guest: Coeur d’Alene is still tough - for now. CdA 28, Lakeland 14.

Moscow at Bonners Ferry: File this in the little-known-fact department. Since Moscow joined the Intermountain League in 1991, it has lost three of four games to Bonners Ferry, including two in a row.

Make it three in a row. BF 20, Moscow 14.

Guest: BF 14, Moscow 13.

West Valley at Sandpoint: The Bulldogs, 3-0, have already won one more game than last year. West Valley is 0-2 against IEL teams and desperately needs a win before opening league play next week.

WV’s sense of urgency will be the deciding factor. WV 24, Sandpoint 21.

Guest: The ‘Dogs have the taste of victory in their mouths. Sandpoint 21, WV 20.
