Tissue Blows Over Whitman

Jennifer Tissue scored her sixth and seventh goals of the season Wednesday as Whitworth opened its Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges women’s soccer season with a 4-1 home win over Whitman.

Haley Nichols added two assists, and Chrisanne Roseleip and Taryn Nishibun one goal apiece for the Pirates (1-0, 3-4).

Carole Skeeters of the Missionaries (0-1, 3-4) fed Stephanie Palmer for a second-half goal.

Men’s soccer

Reserve Shaun Flanigan scored twice and David Lesser recorded his first career shutout as Gonzaga (1-3-1) gave first-year head coach Einar Thorarinsson his inaugural win, 3-0 in a non-conference match with visiting California-Irvine (2-4).

Flanigan scored GU’s first goal at 33:08 on an assist from Chris LaRochelle. Scott Davis scored moments later, on an assist from Coby Carlson.

Volleyball

Molinda Vincent’s 17 digs led Columbia Basin Community College to a 15-4, 10-15, 15-6, 15-8 over CC Spokane at Spokane Falls.

The Hawks’ Stacey Estlund had 35 assists . Sheryl Hovde had 32 assists and Kaya Allen 17 digs for CCS.

Whitman defeated visiting Whitworth 15-11, 15-10, 15-17, 15-10 in an NCIC match at Walla Walla. The Pirates’ Mandy Becious had 10 kills.
