James Lovell, spacecraft commander of the perilous Apollo 13 flight and recently portrayed by actor Tom Hanks in the hit movie “Apollo 13,” will speak at Gonzaga University at 8 p.m., Thursday in the Spokane Room of the COG.
Admission is $3 at the door.
During the 1970 Apollo 13 mission, Lovell and his crew successfully modified their lunar module into an effective lifeboat when their oxygen system failed. Their emergency activation and operation of lunar module systems conserved both electrical power and water sufficiently to assure their survival in space and their safe return to Earth.
In 1994, Lovell used the story of the Apollo 13 mission as a basis for his book, “Lost Moon,” on which the movie script was based.
