Newspapers Refuse Offer By Teamsters

Compiled From Wire Services

Detroit Newspapers on Thursday rejected an offer from the Teamsters to reduce the contract demands of circulation employees in the hope of ending the 10-week strike.

Detroit Newspapers, which handles the business and production operations of The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press, wants deeper job cuts than it sought before the strike began July 13.

Detroit Newspapers originally proposed to eliminate 59 district circulation manager jobs, but now wants to cut more. Circulation is down and unlikely to return to previous levels once the strike ends, an executive said.
