Sumitomo To Build Chip Plant In Phoenix

Compiled From Wire Services

A major Japanese electronics corporation will build a $400 million manufacturing plant for computer chips in Phoenix, establishing Arizona as Silicon Valley’s southwest beachhead.

Executives of Sumitomo Sitix Corp. said the plant could double in size eventually. It will employ about 400 people at first.

Junichi Ishida, executive vice president of Sumitomo in Amagasaki, Japan, said the company opted for Phoenix over a Portland suburb because of the state’s tax breaks and its quick rate in processing business permits.
