Mariners Alone At The Top In West Crowd Of 51,500 Watches Seattle Slug Four Homers In 10-7 Victory
The Seattle Mariners moved into first place in the A.L. West, rallying from a six-run deficit to beat Oakland 10-7 Friday night on a grand slam by Vince Coleman and a go-ahead homer by Alex Diaz.
A crowd of 51,500 at the Kingdome saw Ken Griffey Jr. and Edgar Martinez also homer for Seattle, which took a one-game lead over California. The Angels lost their eighth in a row, 8-3 to Texas.
Never before had the Mariners been alone in first place past May during their 19-year history.
Coleman’s first career slam capped a six-run sixth that made it 6-all. Griffey began the inning with his 15th homer, marking the third straight game he’s connected.
Martinez opened the eighth with a homer that tied it at 7. One out later, Diaz hit a pinch-homer for the lead.
New ticket number
Ticketmaster has created an 800 number to handle the unprecedented demand for Mariners tickets. The new number, 1-800-800-3500, will allow Ticketmaster to add almost 100 additional operators to handle ticket requests.
Calls for Mariners tickets, both for the postseason and the remaining regular-season games, will be directed to several different phone centers around the country.
Local Ticketmaster numbers are still operational.
The ticket agency reports that there are still plenty of tickets remaining for both the postseason game strips and the remaining regular-season games.
