Coulthard Takes Pole

Scotsman David Coulthard outraced team leader Damon Hill, clinching the pole position for the Portuguese Grand Prix in Estoril, Portugal, in an impressive 1-2 finish for Williams-Renault’s revamped racers.

After rain washed out qualifying for the second straight day, Jeff Gordon was awarded the top qualifying spot based on season points, which he leads by 309 over seven-time series champion Dale Earnhardt, for today’s Goody’s 500 NASCAR Winston Cup race in Martinsville, Va.
