League Cooks Up ‘Delicious’ Book

Junior League members have been cooking and cooking and cooking …

They have tested - three times each - some 2,000 recipes to arrive at the 250 selected for the Junior League of Spokane’s “GOLD’n Delicious” cookbook which should be on the shelves of local bookstores, select department stores and specialty shops by early October.

GOLD’n Delicious was created, designed and printed by Junior League members. The cookbook features menus and recipes using many Inland Northwest products, and highlights Spokane-area activities, landmarks and lifestyles.

Sale profits will help fund league projects intended to eliminate the destructive cycle of poverty, abuse, homelessness and neglect in the community.

A total of 15,000 copies will be in the first printing; reprints will occur based on sales and continued demand. Pre-release orders may be placed by calling 328-2166. Retail price is $22.95 (plus tax).

Hot time in the old town

Reservations are due Thursday for Saturday’s “A Night in New Orleans” gourmet dinner and auction at the Crescent Court.

Auction items include a football autographed by Drew Bledsoe, a bat and ball autographed by Ken Griffey Jr., Elvis and Beatle records - and the removal of one’s wisdom teeth …

Tickets for the event sponsored by Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest are $35 each, or $270 for a table of eight. Call the Goodwill office at 838-4246 before noon Thursday.

Let’s deal

St. Patrick’s Parish Altar Society will sponsor a card party and salad luncheon from noon to 3 p.m., Oct. 13, at St. Patrick’s school hall at Queen and Lacey.

Mu Phi Epsilon meets

Spokane Alumni chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon meets Tuesday for its first meeting of the 1995-96 year at the home of Dorothy Murray.

The evening begins with a potluck at 6:30 p.m. Guests will be members of Mu Beta from Washington State University. President Gretchen Weed will present convention highlights. Assisting will be Diane Isherwood and Gretchen Stieler.

Officers installed

Colleen Kassa was elected president of the Spokane Regional Council of Beta Sigma Phi.

Other newly elected officers are Hollyce Swan, vice president; Darlene Kirk, recording secretary; Shelley Hecker, corresponding secretary; and Sharon Morgan, treasurer.

Brenda Gormley, Jacque Todd, Pat Conger, Ada Anderson, Shelley Hecker, Marge McAlpin, Janice Blank, Pat Ewy, Irene Davis, Sharon Morgan, Peggy Davis, Terri Norman, Lucile Woods, Pat LaGase, Donna Trefry and Ava Madren will chair committees.

Members will work at the Carrousels and Corks winetasting fund-raiser Monday at the Riverfront Park Carousel to benefit the carousel’s band organ. Tickets are $15 at the door. The “walk-around event” will feature 15 local and regional wineries.

Parents helping parents

The Cleft Lip & Palate Parent Support Group will have its first meeting from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Oct. 12 at 140 S. Arthur, Room 415.

The group will meet the second Thursday of each month.

Audrey Burr will facilitate the first meeting which will also allow time for discussion, sharing personal experiences and interaction with other parents.

Tour guides needed

Gonzaga University’s Jundt Art Museum needs volunteers to serve as tour guides.

Prospective docents are invited to attend instructional sessions beginning Sept. 29 to allow them to conduct informative tours of the building and its exhibitions.

The museum opens Oct. 27 with a public dedication at 11 a.m., and an exhibition by internationally acclaimed glass artist Dale Chihuly.

The Jundt Art Center and Museum is located at E. 202 Cataldo.

Astronaut at GU

James Lovell, spacecraft commander of the Apollo 13 flight will speak at Gonzaga University at 8 p.m. Thursday in the COG’s Spokane Room.

“Lost Moon: The Heroic Story of Apollo 13” is the name of Lovell’s best-selling book on the what could have been a disastrous mission - and the title of his GU speech.

Lovell was portrayed by actor Tom Hanks in “Apollo 13,” this summer’s highly acclaimed and popular movie about the mission.

Admission is $3 at the door; no advanced sales. The event is sponsored by the Gonzaga Student Body Association.

Conceicao honored

Jose Roque Conceicao, an eight-year veteran groundskeeper at Gonzaga University, was recently honored as Worksite Supervisor of the Year by SPEEDY the Summer Program for the Employment, Education and Development of Youth.

SPEEDY is a federally funded education, employment and training program that promotes job readiness and career awareness for young people.

Conceicao was selected from among 75 worksite supervisors.
