Washington State Volleyball Downs No. 11 Arizona State

Shannon Wyckoff had 19 kills and 16 digs Saturday to lead 12th-ranked Washington State (4-0, 11-0) to a 9-15, 15-8, 15-7, 15-12 win over 11th-ranked Arizona State (1-2, 7-2) in a Pacific-10 Conference match at Tempe, Ariz.

Keren Oigman added 17 kills and 13 digs, Elis Arias 14 kills and 13 digs, and Sarah Silvernail 14 kills, 10 digs and eight blocks for the Cougars.

Senior All-American Christine Garner had seven kills and two aces as the Sun Devils won the first game. She finished with 27 kills and 10 digs. ASU led the fourth game 7-1 and 12-6, but back-to-back Arias kills broke a 12-all tie as WSU scored the match’s final nine points.

Penny Sneddon had three aces in the fifth game as visiting Idaho State (1-1, 8-4) beat Eastern Washington 10-15, 15-6, 15-12, 10-15, 15-6 in a Big Sky Conference match.

Tammy Hunter had 19 kills and 13 digs, and Kathy Goods 18 kills, 10 digs and 10 blocks for the Bengals. Kim Exner led the Eagles (0-2, 3-10) with 18 kills, 11 digs and seven blocks, while Jaime Dotson added 61 assists and 25 digs.

Beth Craig had 15 kills and Tzvetelina Yanchulova added 14 kills and 18 digs as Idaho (2-0, 12-2) won its 38th consecutive home match with a 15-7, 15-5, 15-4 Big Sky decision over Boise State (1-1, 10-4).

The Vandals needed just 75 minutes to put an end to the Broncos’ 10-match winning streak. Idaho has nine straight wins over BSU.

Men’s soccer

At Olympia, Dan Ratayczyk and Dave Wheeler scored 1 minute apart late in the second half as host South Puget Sound (1-4-0) beat Community Colleges of Spokane 3-1 in a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges match.

SPS had scored just once this year. The day didn’t look any brighter until Wheeler took a feed from Charlie Rowe just before halftime.

The Sasquatch (1-2-1) scored on their first shot on goal. Adrian Reyes took the ball in the middle and quick-touched it to Doug Birdtail, who scored from 30 yards out.

Women’s soccer

Taryn Nishibun, off a pass from Joy Cullen, scored at the near post midway through the second half as Whitworth (2-0-0, 4-4-0) edged host George Fox 1-0 in a Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges match at Newberg, Ore.

The Pirates missed five or six good scoring chances in the first 25 minutes. The Bruins dropped to 0-1-1, 2-4-2.

CCS won its NWAACC opener, 1-0, when Tacoma didn’t arrive for a match at Spokane Falls CC. Tacoma gave no reason for the forfeit.

Cross country

The Colorado men and women swept the Big Cross Invitational at Pasco.

Adam Goucher of Colorado won’s the men’s 5-mile race in 23 minutes, 54 seconds. Colorado’s Patty Roberts won the women’s 5 kilometers in 17:44.61.

The Buffaloes scored 38 points in the men’s race to fight off a challenge from Portland (48) and UCLA (80). Weber State finished fourth, with 101, followed by Washington State, 111; Gonzaga, 166; and Eastern Washington, 206.

The Colorado women, with 26 points, beat runner-up UCLA (51). WSU, 59; GU, 111; Portland, 128; and EWU, 174, followed.

Andy Martin of the host Pirates won the Whitworth Invitational, running the 8,000 meters in 24:53 seconds. Martin finished nearly 1 minute ahead of the pack.

Kathleen Gibson of Whitman won the women’s 5,000 in 18:44 and led the Missionaries to the team title, with 36 points to the 39 of Pacific Lutheran. PLU handily won the men’s title.
