Ex-Lc Tigers Star Barlow Arrested State Patrol Trooper Stops Him Driving A Car Reported As Stolen

A record-breaking former Lewis and Clark High School football player has been arrested on suspicion of stealing a car, authorities said.

Robert L. Barlow, 20, 837 S. Cowley, was arrested early Friday in the Spokane Valley and released Saturday from the Spokane County Jail.

Barlow is the Greater Spokane League’s all-time single-season and career leading rusher.

A Washington State Patrol trooper stopped Barlow near Sprague and Pines for failing to stop at a red light about 2:30 a.m. Friday.

Barlow told the trooper he didn’t have a driver’s license and initially gave a false name, court documents say. The trooper discovered the car had been reported stolen from the Circle K at Third and Altamont.

Barlow was jailed on charges of stealing a car and possession of stolen property. In addition, Barlow was driving with a suspended license.

His 17-year-old passenger was arrested on a charge of possession of a stolen property.

Barlow told the trooper he belonged to a gang called the “Black Gangster Disciples,” records show.

Efforts to contact Barlow were unsuccessful Monday.

Barlow moved from Houston to Spokane before his sophomore season. In 1993 and ‘94, he was the GSL’s Most Valuable Player on offense.

In 1993, Barlow rushed for a GSL-record 1,558 yards in eight games and set a single-season scoring record with 128 points.

His 1,749 yards in nine games in 1993 is a Class AAA state record.

In 1994, Barlow led the league with 1,219 yards in seven games as the Tigers went 7-1 and won the league title. That gave him a GSL career record of 3,232 yards in three years.

He also finished as the GSL’s second highest all-time scorer with 220 points.
