Autopsy: Girl Died From Head Trauma

From Staff And Wire Reports

The autopsy of a Coeur d’Alene toddler showed on Tuesday she died from significant head trauma that caused bleeding on the brain.

Christina Campanelli, 2, was brought to Kootenai Medical Center last week by her mother, Eileen Campanelli, and her mother’s boyfriend, Federico Cortez.

The toddler was unconscious and had multiple bruises on her body. Cortez told hospital officials that the girl had fallen and hurt herself, according to a Coeur d’Alene Police report.

But doctors at the hospital told police that it appeared the girl suffered a much more severe blow to the head.

The child died Sunday.

Kootenai County sheriff’s officials suspect the girl may have been abused although no charges have been filed in the case.

Capt. Ben Wolfinger said testing is being done to determine when exactly the girl was injured.
