Heavy Rains Cause Spokane Washout

Heavy downpours Thursday afternoon sent streams of water down city streets, caused at least one washout in Spokane and left big puddles alongside roads.

The National Weather Service said the heaviest showers passed to the north of Spokane, but rainfall varied throughout the region.

The weather service recorded 0.10 inches of rain in just a few minutes about 5 p.m. as a shower cloud passed overhead.

A spokesman for the street maintenance department in Spokane said a small washout on Aubrey L. White Parkway left a pile of rocks and mud in the westbound lane near the city sewage plant. No other problems were reported.

Meteorologist Dennis Bray said the stormy weather is expected to continue off and on through next Tuesday. Showers are expected Saturday and again on Monday.

So far this month, the weather service has recorded 1.58 inches of rain compared with a monthly normal of 0.67 inches.
