Past, Present WSU Choir Members Mark Centenary

A centennial anniversary concert will be staged by the Washington State University Concert Choir Sunday at 3 p.m. at the WSU Kimbrough Concert Hall in Pullman.

More than 80 alumni of the choir will return for the event.

The weekend celebration will include receptions, dinners and rehearsals for the choir and alumni. The past choir members will join the Concert Choir in a performance of the “Tafellied” by Johannes Brahams and “In Peace and Joy I Now Depart” by David Fetler.

The director of the choir from 1961 to 1991, WSU professor emeritus Frank Green, will share the conducting with current conductor Paul Klemme.

The concert is free and will also include a performance by the WSU Madrigal Singers, directed by Lori Wiest.

The WSU Concert Choir began as a singing society during the 1890s, shortly after WSU was chartered. During the 1930s, the choir assumed a major role within the music school’s curriculum, presenting formal a capella choral concerts and collaborating with the University Symphony Orchestra.

In 1987, the choir was invited to perform at Lincoln Center in New York City.

A CD recorded by the choir was released in 1994.
